Pitti Immagine Uomo, the world's largest men's fashion trade fair, opened in Florence, Italy, on June 17th. With 1,030 exhibitors from 30 countries gathering at the Fortezza da Basso as its main venue, the four-day exhibition for the Spring/Summer 2015 season will run until the 20th.
The theme of this year's Pitti Immagine Uomo is "ping pong." The entire venue is themed around ping pong, and in response to the FIFA World Cup being held in Brazil, table tennis, a minor sport in Italy, is being promoted in various areas as a design inspiration for Pitti people. The venue was designed by Oliviero Baldini.
This theme, titled "Ping Pitti Pong," was created in collaboration with the Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, by setting up a table tennis table in one corner of the main venue and holding a tournament-style match with exhibitors, press, bloggers, and others participating. Focusing on ping pong culture, which has evolved from Nixon's diplomacy with China in the 1970s to now being a fixture in the homes of Hollywood stars, Pitti Immagine's deputy general director, Agostino Poletto, explained the theme of this year's event by saying, "Fashion and trends react differently to each other, making the outcome unpredictable." The venue featured an installation of a mechanical ping pong table, Japanese manga, and photos of Bob Marley, Mao Zedong, and the official website also featured 1970s-style GIF animations showcasing ping pong in an Italian modern design style.
