Noritaka Tatehana's Bunraku performance, "TATEHANA BUNRAKU: The Love Suicides on the Bridge / Nomadic Nights," will be held at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in France on March 23rd and 24th. Bunraku, a traditional Japanese performing art boasting over 300 years of history, is a puppet theater trinity comprised of three arts: tayu (narrator), shamisen player, and puppeteer. It has been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan by UNESCO. The stage director for this performance will be Noritaka Tatehana, a contemporary Japanese artist known worldwide for creating "heelless shoes" inspired by the geta (wooden clogs) worn by courtesans. A special troupe formed exclusively for this performance, including master Bunraku puppeteer Kanjuro Kiritake III, will perform a short three-act play featuring three courtesans. Tatehana is also in charge of the stage design and costumes, and the intricately crafted stage, costumes, and props, all created in collaboration with traditional Japanese craftsmen, are sure to be a highlight of the production.
