Daniel Arsham, the artist admired by Pharrell, Usher, and Eddie, to hold his first solo exhibition in Japan in Shibuya

Mar 11, 2016

New York-based contemporary artist Daniel Arsham's new solo exhibition, "My First Show in Japan, Year 2044," will open on March 12th at Gallery Nanzuka in Shibuya. This will be his first solo exhibition in Asia, following his exhibition at Perrotin in Hong Kong last fall.

Arsham was born in 1980. His diverse work spans painting, sculpture, installation, architecture, performance, and video. He is known for his work on stage sets for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, as well as more recently for creating runway art for Public School and for creating the cast model for Pharrell Williams' "GIRL" exhibition in Paris.

He is well-known in street culture as a result of his friendships with hip-hop stars such as Usher, Jay-Z, and Swizz Beatz, and designers such as Hedi Slimane, and his artwork for luxury houses such as Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein has earned him widespread popularity.

The works in this exhibition are based on the concept of "Fiction Archaeology," and the three-dimensional works presented here are made from a variety of materials, including pyrite, selenite, volcanic ash, glass, obsidian, and lithic rock, from an architectural and environmental perspective. From an archaeological perspective, they evoke the idea of a future in which replica Casiotone MT500 keyboards, cameras, and boomboxes become fossils.

In Japan, UNITED ARROWS & SONS stores are exhibiting "SNARKITECTURE," a plaster sculpture by Arsham and his partner Alex Mustonen, and a collaborative T-shirt with POGGITHEMAN will be released.

The exhibition will also feature a new series of paintings of the moon, which Arsham, who is colorblind, created for the first time using color-correcting glasses.
