Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Thursday, each branch of the art bookshop "NADiff" will introduce a book they recommend. This time, we will be introducing the book recommended by NADiff Contemporary, a branch in Kiyosumi Shirakawa, Tokyo (located inside the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, 4-1-1 Miyoshi, Koto-ku, Tokyo).
■ "Art Entrance: Beautiful Things, How to Explore the World [America Edition]" by Taka Kawachi
Taka Kawachi, who moved to the United States after graduating from high school and has since worked in New York, curating contemporary art and photography, and compiling photo books, continues to work in these fields in Tokyo, sharing his friendships with many famous artists and discussing his "favorites" in painting, photography, music, and more. The author's vast knowledge and memories of artists whose names you've likely heard before, such as Andy Warhol, Patti Smith, William Klein, Jackson Pollock, and Richard Prince, are recounted with such realism that it's as if you've traveled back in time to America at the time. The author recounts the extraordinary effort involved in the editing process of Nan Goldin's photobook, where she would suddenly burst into tears or anger due to her strong emotional attachment to her own photographs. Originally based on Facebook posts, each piece is short and easy to read. Each work is accompanied by a color photograph, making it easy to understand even for those unfamiliar with the work. This book is sure to appeal to many readers, as it serves as a collection of essays rather than an art guide.
The "MOT Collection: Collection Ongoing" exhibition (currently running until May 29th) is being held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, where you can view works of 1960s pop art by artists such as Warhol, who appears in this book, as well as Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney. You're sure to gain a deeper understanding by visiting the exhibition as well.
