The "Switch.Design Exhibition" by the University of Tokyo i.school will be held at the university's Hongo Campus from Monday, February 18th to Sunday, February 24th, 2013.
The University of Tokyo i.school is an educational program for learning innovation techniques. The exhibition is based on the concept of "a switch that enriches everyday activities by slightly modifying the objects we use in our daily lives." With the cooperation of professionals, the ideas of students studying in the program will be turned into actual products and exhibited.
The exhibition is organized by the SWITCH.DESIGN team, a group of design amateurs formed by volunteers centered around members of Team B from i.school's third workshop, "Innovation in Home Appliances." Led by Umemura, a fourth-year law student and full-time student at i.school, the exhibition will showcase the finest ideas they have carefully considered. The "Home Appliance Innovation" workshop that sparked this Switch exhibition was facilitated by Takuya Akashi of Hitachi's Design Division and Shunsuke Ishikawa of the London-based design consulting firm PDD, and took place over four days. The workshop explored how familiar household chores like cleaning and laundry could be transformed into completely new experiences. "Because students aren't constrained by the constraints of business, they are more motivated to create something purely innovative. I would like to continue holding this workshop in the future," commented Ishikawa.
