Nov 11, 2014

Novelist Kurt Vonnegut was born on November 11, 1922, in Indiana, USA. He passed away on April 11, 2007.
Born to a family of German immigrants, he attended Cornell University. He was drafted and moved between universities while studying mechanical engineering as instructed by the military. In 1944, he was deployed to the European front of World War II. However, he was captured by the German army and imprisoned in a prisoner-of-war camp in Dresden, known as "Slaughterhouse 5." He was liberated by the Red Army in 1945 and awarded a Purple Heart.
After returning to the United States, Vonnegut was discharged from the military and married his childhood sweetheart, Jane Marie Cox. He began working in public relations for General Electric, where his brother worked. He also began his novel career, publishing his first full-length novel, "Player Piano," in 1952. Although he continued to write, his work initially received little public acclaim.

However, when his 1963 novel "Cat's Cradle" became a bestseller, Vonnegut's work began to be reevaluated. In 1969, he published "Slaughterhouse-Five," based on his experiences during World War II. This work won the Hugo Award and received rave reviews throughout the United States, exerting a significant influence on subsequent science fiction writers. While incorporating elements of science fiction, his writing also satirizes politics and war, incorporating many experimental ideas, such as featuring the author himself in "Breakfast of Champions," published in 1973.

In his personal life, he remarried children's author Jill Clements, and after his sister Edith died in an accident, he adopted her children, eventually having seven children.

Hikari Ota of Bakusho Mondai lists Vonnegut as one of his favorite authors. His agency, Titan, is named after Vonnegut's novel "The Sirens of Titan."
