The painter René François Ghislain Magritte was born on November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium. He died on August 15, 1967.

He moved around the country frequently as a child, and when he was 13, his mother committed suicide by drowning. This had a major influence on his later style. He entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels in 1816, and after graduating, he earned a living by creating promotional posters and other works. However, after being impressed by the work "Song of Love" by Giorgio de Chirico, a member of the Metaphysical Painting School, Magritte's style gradually began to lean towards Surrealism.

After holding his first solo exhibition in Brussels in 1927, he moved to Paris for a time and participated in the Surrealist movement. However, three years later, he returned to Belgium, where he settled in a small apartment.

Although his style was initially not well received by the general public, by the late 1930s, understanding of Surrealism had spread, and Magritte's work gradually gained popularity. One of his most famous works is "Castle of the Pyrenees." A huge rock mass floats in the sky, with the ocean at its base, and a stone castle towers above it. Magritte's paintings portray commonplace motifs in his work in impossible forms, which had a profound influence on later advertising and graphic art.

In his personal life, he married his childhood friend, Georgette Bergé, in 1922. She frequently appears in Magritte's works and would remain his wife for the rest of his life. In his later years he became a representative surrealist painter, but he never had a studio and continued to paint in a room in his apartment throughout his life.
