Diverse botanicals and attention to materials [London Women's Fashion Day 1]

Nov 26, 2014

London Fashion Week took place from September 12th to 16th, with various brands presenting their SS15 women's collections.

Opening the show, J. JS Lee was inspired by the work of contemporary artist Meekyoung Shin, a friend of the designer, and created the brand's first graphic botanical print. The original image of the print was created by pressing irises and daisies, scanning them, and then processing them on a computer. The collection featuring this print featured relaxed tailoring with a grunge feel. The shoulders of the shirts fell gently, and the jackets did not emphasize the waist. Inspired by art, picture frames were also used as a motif, with graphic squares painted on the dresses. J. JS Lee 15SS Collection

Similarly, Eudon Choi added variety to relaxed tailoring with asymmetrical gathers and slits. Inspired by the painter Georgia O'Keeffe, he also showed a dress combining a large O'Keeffe-esque floral print with striped shirting. Eudon Choi SS15 Collection

Fedor Golan presented a completely different world with neon colors and micro-mini skirts, incorporating leaf-motif prints. Simple skirt and dress silhouettes were given a pop of color with neon-colored tape, long horizontal strips of fabric, and feathers. In collaboration with Microsoft, a giant pyramid-shaped screen was set up in the center of the show venue. Live footage of the show was projected onto the screen. Christopher Raeburn used pale botanical prints like camouflage. Following the men's collection, the collection drew inspiration from decommissioned air force bases, but this was the lightest collection for Raeburn's women's collection to date. White cotton was used for airy dresses and long parkas, while the intricate knitting of air force uniforms was layered on sheer organza to create feminine jackets and tops. The designer's signature parachute silk was dyed fuchsia pink. Christopher Raeburn SS15 Women's Collection

DAKS created an airy and elegant look with a color palette of various shades of gray and dusky pale colors, using materials such as silk, ultra-lightweight Tasmanian wool, and cashmere gauze. In honor of the dance and opera that inspired them, for the first time in DAKS' collection history, the show was held in its own venue at the Royal Opera House. This season also saw a new experiment: the collection did not feature any house checks. DAKS 15SS Collection

The young brand Faustine Steinmetz has crafted intricate denim pieces, including jackets and pants made from multiple layers of bonded recycled denim yarn, and pants made from finely squeezed denim with hand stitching. Designer Steinmetz explains her commitment to materials, saying, "Because these are intricate pieces that take a week to complete, I wanted to make them out of denim that can be worn every day."
