The contemporary fashion exhibition "Inside Out" is taking place in Hamburg, a city in northern Germany. The venue is the Hamburg Museum of Applied Arts, a venue for exhibiting design and crafts. The exhibition features a variety of garments by designers active since the 1980s, including Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, Martin Margiela, and Iris van Herpen. The exhibition presents 55 fashion designs from four perspectives: "Exposure," "Simulation," "Alienation," and "Reshaping." The "Exposure" section showcases garments designed to reveal the body, a part of the body that clothing is meant to conceal. Bernhard Willhelm's design features a T-shirt with a cutout at the chest. Other pieces, such as Gareth Pugh's dresses that reveal large parts of the body, strongly emphasize the close connection between clothing and the body. "Simulation" showcases designs that alter the shape of the body. One particularly eye-catching piece is Iris van Herpen's dress. As the name "Snake Dress" suggests, it features a unique shape resembling a snake coiling around the body. These garments allow the body to take on a completely different shape. Also noteworthy is the connection between contemporary fashion and fashion history. "Reshaping" showcases contemporary fashion designs that reference tradition. A Comme des Garçons evening dress from 2012 is displayed alongside a dress from the early 20th century. The exhibition emphasizes the commonality between the past and the present, highlighting how designers incorporate historical contexts to create new meanings. "Alienation" explores the meanings of fashion born since the 1980s. Comme des Garçons' work is one answer. The exhibit features the 2012-13 Autumn/Winter collection, highlighting elements that were not traditionally considered beautiful, such as seams. These designs call into question the conventional ways of fashion, while at the same time giving a strong sense of new values.
The exhibition conveys that the direction of contemporary fashion is not only directed towards the body inside the clothes, but also towards the outside, and that fashion is not just referencing past values but pursuing new ones. Just as the exhibition title means "inside out (turned inside out)," this is nothing other than the image of fashion developing in multiple directions rather than in one direction. This exhibition, which delves into the subject from a bold perspective, is an interesting attempt to learn about the current state of fashion.
