IKEA Shibuya opens today, November 30th! The world's first Swedish bistro specializing in veggie hot dogs

Nov 30, 2020
IKEA Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture; President and Chief Sustainability Officer: Helen von Reis), the Japanese subsidiary of IKEA, a home furnishing company with origins in Sweden whose vision is to "create a better everyday life for the many people," will open its second urban store, IKEA Shibuya, on November 30, 2020, with all necessary measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

"We are thrilled to be opening our first IKEA city store in the heart of Shibuya. It is the perfect location for us to expand into the city center, making IKEA more accessible to even more people. IKEA Shibuya will be a compact seven-story store that offers a traditional IKEA store experience with 1,800 products to take home, and others that can be purchased in-store or online," said Helen von Reiss, President and Chief Sustainability Officer.

"IKEA is also committed to promoting plant-based food and is proud to open the world's first Swedish bistro specializing in veggie hot dogs, offering a wide variety of delicious menu items. IKEA Shibuya offers many solutions for creating comfortable, sustainable homes in ways that are kind to the earth and your wallet. We will continue to do our best towards our goal of becoming climate positive by 2030."

IKEA Shibuya is the first IKEA store in the world to be seven stories tall. With 19 different departments and a Swedish food market, you can enjoy the experience of a traditional store in the heart of the city in a compact, open space.

IKEA Shibuya will have approximately 3,100 items on display that customers can see and touch. Of these, approximately 1,800 items can be taken home on the day. All other products sold by IKEA Japan, totaling approximately 9,500 items, can be ordered and delivered at IKEA Shibuya, the IKEA online store, or the IKEA app.

Eight room sets offer lifestyle ideas for customers with a variety of lifestyles and family structures. Also, for the first time in a city shop, we will feature a smart home experience corner, a children's furniture and toy section, and numerous Instagrammable design spots.

The restaurant floor on the 7th floor is scheduled to open in spring 2021.

Now that people are spending more time at home, IKEA wants to propose sustainable living to more people than ever before.

Features of IKEA Shibuya
・The first Swedish bistro specializing in veggie hot dogs at IKEA stores worldwide
Enjoy not only simple veggie hot dogs, but also dishes filled with flavorful and colorful ingredients. Of the 10 menu items, 8 are exclusive to Shibuya, and 6 feature plant-based ingredients. All of the product names are named after cities in Sweden. One of our recommended dishes is the STOCKHOLM, a veggie hot dog topped with IKEA's original plant-based kebab, served with a spicy soy yogurt and Sriracha sauce for a satisfying meal. The Bistro also offers some plant-based dishes.

・Swedish Food Market, first time at City Shop
This is the first food section at City Shop. As with traditional IKEA stores, it offers a wide selection of delicious, sustainable Swedish items. We offer products such as plant balls, which are a replica of IKEA meatballs made with plant-based ingredients instead of meat, at affordable prices. Please feel free to try out our products, which are kind to both the earth and people.

・Limited edition item only available at IKEA Shibuya
KNORVA, a hat made from FRAKTA material, the familiar IKEA shopping bag, is available exclusively at IKEA Shibuya. It's a convenient item that is highly water-resistant and can be folded up compactly when not in use. If you're an IKEA fan, be sure to check it out.

In addition, in preparation for the opening, IKEA Shibuya will be implementing the following measures to prevent the infection and spread of COVID-19.
- Thorough alcohol disinfection at the entrance
- Maintaining social distancing inside the store
- To alleviate congestion, numbered tickets will be issued via the queue reception website from the day before the grand opening*
- Admission restrictions will be implemented depending on the situation inside the store
- Vinyl curtains will be installed at cash registers and other facilities where customers come into contact with customers
- Customers will be required to maintain a certain distance from each other, or will be moved to areas with vinyl curtains when serving customers
- Co-workers will wear masks, and where necessary, face shields when serving customers
- Spray bottles of hand sanitizer will be installed in multiple locations inside the store

Numbered ticket numbers will be issued via the online queue reception website
From 9pm on Sunday, November 29, the day before the grand opening, numbered ticket numbers for visitors on the 30th (Monday) will be issued on the dedicated website

We will be checking the congestion situation in the shop and will send you notifications to visit via your registered email address as appropriate.
