Photographer and film director Mika Ninagawa's fashion brand, "M / mika ninagawa," will debut in the Spring/Summer 2015 season.
The project began in 2013 when she presented a graphic textile featuring her own work for fabric manufacturer Komatsu Seiren at the international fabric fair, Premiere Vision, held in Paris. The originality of the textile garnered high praise from international media and fashion brands. Subsequently, brands such as ANREALAGE and G.V.G.V. commercialized the textile. A pop-up store featuring the same products opened at the Isetan Shinjuku store in December 2013, where approximately 100 items immediately sold out. Fans reportedly expressed their hopes for a repeat purchase.
The decision to debut the brand is now being made in response to these demands. Ninagawa, who enjoys a wide range of popularity from teenagers to those in their 40s, reflects the current mood and trends captured by his unique antennae, proposing original styles that Ninagawa himself truly wants to wear. The full lineup includes a resort-inspired maxi dress (¥50,000), an elegant short-sleeve dress (¥36,000), a structured shirt dress (¥37,000), casual sweatshirts (¥24,000), and sweatpants (¥19,000). Each style features approximately two to six graphics, showcasing a variety of styles, from bold full-body designs to accent shirt collars and hidden pocket linings. The graphic and complex color palette of Ninagawa's work has traditionally been considered difficult to replicate on fabric. However, using Komatsu Seiren's digitally printed fabric "Mona Lisa," the collection's delicate technology utilizes 16.7 million colors to achieve vividness and a wide range of colors.
Other items available include tote bags (7,900 yen), clutch bags (6,900 yen), pouches (4,900 yen), and a variety of accessories such as scrunchies (3,000 yen) and hair bands (2,800 yen). The price range has been carefully considered to make the collection accessible to a wide range of ages.
First, a pop-up store will be opening on the second floor stage of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku from January 21st to 27th, 2015. The full lineup will be available for pre-sale.
