Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, was born on November 2, 1755, in Vienna, Holy Roman Empire. She died on October 16, 1793. She was the 11th daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I Stephan and Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria. At the age of 14, she married Louis-Auguste, Dauphin of France, who later became Emperor Louis XVI, and lived at the Palace of Versailles in Paris. When Louis XV died in 1774, Marie became Queen of France. However, Marie, who was only 14 at the time of her marriage, began to lead a hedonistic life, attending masked balls every night, partly because her husband was impotent. It was around this time that she began wearing lavish dresses, purchasing expensive jewelry, and ordering a luxury watch from Breguet. When designer Rose Bertin was invited to the palace, she created trends such as the high-backed hairstyle, influencing the fashion of the time. Marie also preferred a return to nature over palace life, recreating a rural lifestyle in the Petit Trianon, and was fond of wearing muslin country dresses.

However, France at the time was in financial difficulty due to repeated wars, and in contrast to the luxurious palace life, the people were poor and hungry. Furthermore, because Marie neglected the nobility and their wives, she came to be criticized within the palace as a wasteful "Austrian woman."

In 1885, Countess de La Motte visited the Archbishop of Strasbourg. She said she had come to purchase a diamond necklace from a jeweler on behalf of the queen and asked him to cover the cost. The archbishop gladly paid the money for the prospect of a connection to the royal family, but in fact, the Countess de La Motte was a non-existent person, and the archbishop was defrauded of the necklace. When news of this fraud spread, the impoverished citizens of the time angered the victim, the queen, and questioned whether the royal palace was truly allowing such a luxurious lifestyle that it could purchase such an expensive necklace.

The necklace scandal caused Marie Antoinette's popularity in France to plummet. The storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1889, sparked the French Revolution. The royal family attempted to flee to Austria, but were discovered by citizens in Varennes and brought back to Paris. There was no mercy for the royal family, who had abandoned their country, and Marie Antoinette finally ascended to the guillotine in October 1893. She died at the young age of 37. Although she met a tragic end, her luxurious lifestyle and Rococo style have inspired many creators. Films depicting Marie Antoinette's life have been produced, including "Marie Antoinette" directed by Sofia Coppola in 2006 and "Goodbye, Marie Antoinette" directed by Benoit Jacquot in 2012.
