Photographer Mariko Oya, who explores her own unique photographic expression while tracing memories from the past, will be holding a solo exhibition titled "KYRIE" from March 22nd to April 9th at the OFS gallery in OUR FAVOURITE SHOP in Shirokane, Tokyo.
Oya spent six years, from junior high to high school, living in a boarding school at a Catholic girls' school far from her hometown. Separated from her family and society and living under strict discipline, her life there has had a profound psychological impact that continues to this day. Due to this impact, Oya was unable to face her subjects directly, and instead focused solely on photographing the "world of reflections" reflected in glass and mirrors.
Eventually, she overcame this limitation and returned to her roots. Visiting the boarding school where she once lived and facing her subjects from her roots, Oya decided to pursue a career as a photographer. This exhibition, the second since "sky, tree, earth" held in the summer of 2015, will feature the latest works from the past two years in the series that Oya has been photographing as her life's work since she decided to become a photographer.
"The world is exquisitely beautiful.
The deeper the darkness, the more beautiful it is.
Confronting myself and continuing to embody my inner emotions is my way of life."
In conjunction with the exhibition, a gallery talk will be held on March 25th, featuring Takram's Watanabe Kotaro, Oya Mariko and KIGI. In addition, from March 24th, a special exhibition titled "Graphic Flower Arrangement," in collaboration with art director Koichi Kobayashi, will be held at CABANE de ZUCCa Daikanyama.
