[HOHO#001 Report] A workshop to make "Time Specimens" together with KIGI was held at H.P.DECO!

Oct 16, 2016
"HOHO" Smile EVENTS presented by KIGI/FH/MUSUBI (hereafter referred to as HOHO) is an event by KIGI, Aoki Musubi, and FH (=FASHION HEADLINE). HOHO is a project that brings together creators with whom we have close ties to create "spaces for experiences" and "places for empathy," connecting hearts through live experiences, creations, workshops, and more.

The first event was a workshop titled "Specimen of Time #001"! It was hosted by KIGI's Ryosuke Uehara and Yoshishige Watanabe. KIGI has worked in a wide range of genres, including graphic and art direction for product brand D-BROS, PASS THE BATON, Laforet, Parco, and Theater Products, and has opened their own original shop and gallery, "OUR FAVOURITE SHOP," in Shirokane. The name KIGI embodies the idea of likening creativity to trees, carefully nurturing each individual tree to eventually turn into a forest. It's our hope that this workshop will serve as a seed in that direction.

The event took place at H.P.DECO, a select shop in Omotesando. H.P.DECO deals in new creations from France and other European countries, as well as second-hand furniture selected without regard to design or era. On the day, chairs, desks, and a podium were lined up in the back of the store, and the KIGI duo began their one-day workshop with eight guests.

This is "Specimen of Time," an artwork released by KIGI in 2008. When you open an old book, you will find a butterfly resting on it.

This butterfly has been meticulously painted and cut out from the pages. It looks so delicate, like the real thing, and looks like it could take flight at any moment. In this workshop, participants were given the opportunity, under KIGI's guidance, to breathe life into the "butterfly" they had drawn in the book with their own hands.

First, participants chose old books prepared by the two members of KIGI and the butterfly they wanted to draw. Some of the old books were Watanabe's personal belongings. After this, they began working on their designs, which consisted of tracing and coloring, but it was a very painstaking task as they drew patterns not only on the front but also on the back of the butterfly's wings.

Uehara and Watanabe were impressed by the participants' high level of artistic ability.

Time flew by and before they knew it, three hours had passed... They were fully committed to their work without a break. Even for the two members of KIGI, it takes about six hours to complete the front and back of a butterfly, so that was the time limit for the day. Each piece was stamped with a stamp from Uehara as proof of participation, and the workshop came to a close with all eight participants lining up their works. In this way, new life was breathed into old books that had been sleeping on the bookshelf.

The workshop went by in a flash, thank you for your hard work!

HOHO will continue to use its ingenuity to come up with new ideas, invite creators, and prepare wonderful "methods" that will make you nod in agreement, waiting for you together with the wise owl "HOHO"!
