A huge collection of pop, cute, and modern kimonos at Isetan! Collaborative events with cool craftsmen too!

Nov 13, 2013

A pop-up event featuring new kimonos with denim and geometric patterns that are a departure from traditional kimonos will be held at the 7th floor event hall of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building from November 13th to November 18th.

The event will feature a lineup of kimonos and Japanese accessories divided into three styles: "Kawaii," "Simple & Modern," and "Cool & Stylish."

Participating stores include Bushoan, which continues to offer innovative ideas under the theme of "adding fashion to kimonos," the popular brand Quruli, which also has a shop in Omotesando, and Fujioka Kumihimo, a braiding brand that continues the tradition of Ito Kumihimo while experimenting with vibrant colors.

Web-exclusive brands such as Rumirock, Modern Kimono Accessories Umeya, Wafure, Roccoya, and Kofu An will open physical stores for a limited time. Other brands featured include Hideya Kobo, which incorporates jacquard and flannel into kimonos, and Nobiru, which uses traditional techniques from the Edo period to create hand-painted batik textiles such as tenugui (hand towels) and bags. A number of helpful classes are planned for the event, including an obi tying class (13th, 16th, and 17th, 11am, 2pm, and 4pm each day; reservation required, free participation), a kimono stain removal class (14th, 2pm; reservation required, participation fee: 1,050 yen), a half-collar sewing class (15th, 2pm; reservation required, 1,050 yen), a Kururi corner obi tying lesson (16th, 3pm; free), and a designer visit and customization session with Namatsuan (17th, 1pm-5pm; embroidery starting from 3,150 yen).

In addition, a party will be held in conjunction with the "National IKESHOKU Exhibition," which is being held on the same floor and brings together "cool" artisans from all over the country. Young artisans who use traditional techniques and challenge themselves to create with their own unique sensibilities will be gathering. Artisans participating in the party include Edo Komon expert Hirose Yuichi, Hakata Ori expert Kinoshita Katsuhiro, and silver wirework expert Matsubara Tomohito. The dress code is kimono, and there will also be a live event by Tsugaru shamisen player Fumiyoshi.
