Interior designer Shiro Kuramata was born November 29, 1934, in Tokyo. He passed away on February 1, 1991.

Graduated from the Living Design Department of Kuwasawa Design School in 1956. After working in the San-ai Advertising Department and Matsuya Interior Design Office, he founded Kuramata Design Office in 1965. Around 1967, he gained attention for his collaborations with avant-garde artist Jiro Takamatsu and graphic designer Tadanori Yokoo. He subsequently worked on numerous furniture and commercial spaces, including Seibu Department Store's "Capsule" independent editorial section.
In 1981, he was invited by Ettore Sottsass to participate in "Memphis." He held a solo exhibition in Paris in 1989, earning him international acclaim. He received the Mainichi Industrial Design Award in 1972 and the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture in 1990. He is known for his unique works that express feelings of weightlessness and floating. His representative works include furniture such as "Miss Blanche," "Glass Chair," and "How High the Moon," as well as boutique designs for "ISSEY MIYAKE."

He was a designer who was active worldwide from the 1960s to the 1990s, but passed away in 1991 at the young age of 56 due to acute heart failure. Tokujin Yoshioka was a student of Kuramata.
