Aki Kuroda, who lives in Paris, collaborates with Hiroko Koshino for her first exhibition in a long time in Ginza

Nov 29, 2013

The exhibition "Aki Kuroda 'Cosmo Garden' + Hiroko Koshino," a collaboration between designer Hiroko Koshino and contemporary artist Aki Kuroda, who has lived in Paris for 44 years, opened on the 23rd at KH Gallery Ginza. Aki Kuroda was born in Kyoto in 1944. She exhibited at the Paris Biennale in 1980 and signed a contract with a long-established Paris gallery. In 1993, she became the youngest artist to hold a solo exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the following year, 1994, she held another at the National Museum of Art, Osaka. Her diverse work extends beyond the art world, including collaborations with Tadao Ando in 1998 and Richard Rodgers in 2003. Her diverse work includes stage design for ballets and the facade and interior artwork for Parisian jeweler Mauboussin in 2008 and 2009. This is Kuroda's first exhibition in Japan in a long time. He met Hiroko Koshino, who held a solo art exhibition in Paris last year, and the collaboration came about through their interactions between each other's studios in Ashiya and Montparnasse, Paris. The exhibition's theme, "Cosmo Garden," is a concept that Kuroda has been working on for many years, expanding on the concept of cafe culture where people intersect. The two artists have collaborated on an installation, and Koshino has also presented a work that she herself describes as inspired by Kuroda's work. "Koshino's paintings have the potential to change constantly and are full of freedom. I thought of this exhibition as a punctuation mark in the solidly established city of Tokyo," Kuroda said, adding that an installation expressing "urban planning" has also been presented. The exhibition runs until February 23, 2014.
