UMIT BENAN's 2017 Spring/Summer collection was held at Shibuya Hikarie in Tokyo on October 18th. This was Benan's first time presenting a collection in Japan. Rusty corrugated iron walls served as bags, a sand-covered runway lined with cacti, and a Mexican-inspired atmosphere were evoked. The collection's theme was "Los Bastardos," inspired by the "Western-obsessed Mexicans" Benan encountered near the Texas border, a place he often visits in the summer. Mixing a casual, sporty Mexican style with Western elements like embroidery and piping, the collection showcased the unique blend of cultures while also evoking a sophisticated, sophisticated look. The color palette, including blues, yellows, and pinks, complemented the Mexican sun and desert. Natural materials like jacquard, linen, and denim were used primarily, creating a subtle, elegant touch. The double-breasted suit, worn with a plain tank top or a jacket draped over bare skin, evokes the boyish spirit of Mexican soccer. The pajama-style suit and gown-style jacket create a dandy look, evoking the imagery of Wim Wenders' film "Paris, Texas." Benin also cited characters from the Mexican film "Los Batardos" as inspiration. While Benin has previously presented his collections in Milan and Paris, he admitted he had doubts about the traditional commercial nature of fashion shows. "A show is a very personal experience, where I present my own imagination and vision and celebrate its birth," he says. For him, this show in Japan, a place he holds dear, was particularly special. The show was organized by Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO as part of a research project to promote the Olympic and Paralympic Basic Policies.
