Maruni Wood Industry, which embodies the industrialization of crafts, takes on the new challenge of saunas. A space where the universal meets the innovative.

Aug 27, 2025
Drawing on 100 years of furniture-making skills and a discerning aesthetic, Maruni Wood Industry has launched a new piece of "purifying furniture" called "kupu sauna." This sauna, made from domestic cypress, is more than just a heating facility; it exudes presence as a "tool" that complements everyday life as part of a rich lifestyle.

The name "kupu" comes from the Finnish word for "covering, dome," and its half-dome shape, which gently supports the user, is a reimagining of traditional barrel design to fit into modern lifestyles. The structure, designed to allow heat and steam to circulate geometrically, is the result of intricate technology that combines machinery and artisanal techniques. Hinoki cypress from Yoshino, Nara, is used as the material. Its properties are comparable to those of aspen, a material prized in Finland as a sauna material, and it is sourced from domestic forests, proposing a culture of local production and consumption. The scent, texture, and beauty that develops over time... a perspective that simultaneously refines the elegance of furniture and the comfort of saunas is emerging. Product design was handled by Wataru Kumano, who spent an extended period of time living in Finland and has since become deeply acquainted with saunas and their spatial context. Exploring the relationship between woodworking and the human body, his approach to designing not only the form but also the heat circulation, quietness of sound, and even the shadows of light gives kupu sauna a quiet depth. Furthermore, by combining this with the knowledge of ONE SAUNA, developed by Libertyship, which has a deep understanding of furniture and space, the result is a product that straddles the boundaries between the precision of wooden furniture and the sensibility of sauna experience design.

The act of "getting organized" has now gone beyond the realm of wellness to become the key to honing the sensitivity of one's home. While "kupu sauna" is truly a pure tool for getting organized, it also embodies the universality of Maruniism and has emerged as an icon of tranquil fashion.
