Roppongi Art Night 2014 program announced. Many public events, including a parade and soccer.

Mar 2, 2014

The main visual and program for this year's Roppongi Art Night, a one-night-only art festival taking place from April 19th to 20th, have been announced.

The theme for this year's fifth annual event is "Move Your Body!" Creating art involves using various parts of the body, including the eyes, ears, hands, feet, head, and heart. Katsuhiko Hibino, the event's artistic director, has long been interested in the "physical nature of art." The newly released main visual features a striking design featuring a dynamic ensemble of body parts.

The "Body One Project" is by artist Yoshio Nishio. In addition to "Human House [Skirt]," a gigantic patchwork piece made from stitched-together pieces of secondhand clothing, "Floral Pattern/Flower," made entirely from floral-patterned secondhand clothing, and "Button/Rain," made from stitched-together buttons from secondhand clothing, will be exhibited in various locations around Roppongi. The project calls for donations of secondhand clothing from the public as materials for the artworks, and a workshop is planned for March where participants will work with Nishio to create artworks using the collected clothing.

The "Roppongi Parade: I Want to Float, Flow, and Connect" project, supervised by dancer and choreographer Kim Ito, will feature a parade team of local residents and participants selected from the public dressed in eye-catching costumes marching through Roppongi. Last year's popular "Roppongi Yorakukai" event, in which participants selected from the public enjoyed a meal and conversation with artists, will also be held again.

In preparation for the start of the World Cup, projects combining soccer and art will be implemented. The "Match Flag Project" will involve the creation of large flags featuring the flags of the World Cup opponents and Japan. For the "Hibino Cup in Roppongi," participants will handcraft all the necessary soccer balls, goals, and uniforms. These will then be used to hold a soccer tournament for both children and adults.

Other events will be held in conjunction with the ongoing "Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal," as well as stargazing events, screenings of the latest short animated films, and a "Children's Exhibition" featuring a collection of children's portraits.
