Naomi Osaka Profile
Born in Osaka on October 16, 1997. To a Japanese mother and a Haitian-American father, she moved to the United States at the age of three. She is currently based in Florida. She started playing tennis under her father's tutelage, and began competing in ITF tournaments at the age of 14, honing her skills. She turned professional in 2013. In July 2014, she qualified for the WTA Tour's Stanford tournament, the Bank of the West Classic, and advanced to the main draw for the first time. In January 2016, she made her first appearance in a Grand Slam main draw at the Australian Open, advancing to the third round. She entered the top 100 in the rankings. She continued to achieve the impressive feat of advancing to the third round at the French Open and the US Open.
In October 2016, she finished second at the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament, rising to #40 in the rankings.
She was named the WTA Newcomer of the Year, awarded to the player who made the most progress on the tour in 2016.
In March 2018, she became the first Japanese player to win the WTA Tour's BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, a Premier Mandatory tournament second only to the Grand Slams, joining the ranks of top players.
In September 2018, she won the Grand Slam singles title at the US Open.
In 2019, she won the Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open, achieving her second consecutive victory and rising to the number one ranking. As of August 28, 2020, her WTA ranking is 10th.
