A large-scale exhibition of Kyoko Okazaki, the author of Helter Skelter, arrives in the Kansai region!

Jul 10, 2016

The "Okazaki Kyoko Exhibition: Girls' Life on the Battlefield" will be held at the Itami City Museum of Art (Hyogo Prefecture) from July 30th to September 11th. Okazaki Kyoko is a manga artist known for works such as "pink," "Tokyo Girls Bravo," and "River's Edge." Born and raised in a barbershop in Shimokitazawa, she made her debut while attending junior college. Her first book, "Virgin," was published in 1985. Since then, she has published a series of works in manga magazines, weekly magazines, fashion magazines, and music magazines, until a freak accident in 1996 forced her to suspend her activities. Since then, she has continued to publish and republish unfinished works, and in 2012, her novel "Helter Skelter" was adapted into a film directed by Mika Ninagawa, and she continues to attract new readers. This large-scale exhibition, which also attracted attention last year at the Setagaya Literary Museum in Tokyo's Roka Park, showcases the work of Kyoko Okazaki, who boldly portrayed contemporary realities—the everyday lives of urban girls, the changing face of family, and the desires and anxieties of women under advanced capitalism—in stark contrast to the dreams and aspirations of girls' manga. The exhibition will feature over 300 manuscripts and original drawings, including previously unpublished works, as well as illustrations and sketches from her student days and magazine publications from the 1980s and 1990s. Also available for purchase is the official exhibition catalog, approximately 400 pages long, designed by Shin Sobue and cozfish and featuring numerous original drawings, previously unpublished works, and essays by Banana Yoshimoto and Kenji Ozawa. The exhibition will travel to Mitsubishi Jisho Artium in Fukuoka from December 3 to January 22, 2017.
