On June 11th, Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO presented its Spring/Summer 2018 Men's Collection in London. The venue was an underground car park in London's Soho district. The show kicked off with a live performance by Japanese band duo Jan and Naomi amid the claustrophobic atmosphere of the concrete-covered space.
This season's theme was "#BLANKMIRRORS." Mihara took a bird's-eye view of modern people constantly typing on their smartphones and computers, and focused on the pitch-black screens (#BLANKMIRRORS) that appear when the screens are turned off. Feeling strange about modern communication tools that track enormous amounts of information and attempt to connect with strangers through #, he seems to have incorporated an ironic theme into his creative work this season.
The first look denim jacket featured an illustration of someone throwing a # into a trash can, bringing a smile to Mihara's playful style. Other items followed, featuring messages printed in all directions using patchwork and paint. One outerwear piece that at first glance appears to be a trench coat has an optical illusion with the collar and belt printed on it. Layered shirts with the same striped pattern and denim-on-denim styling also appeared. There were many witty items that seemed to play on visual effects, such as half-wrap pants that looked like a skirt because of the cloth wrapped around the waist, and a hoodie with a deformed zipper.
What Mihara discovered from the pitch-black "#BLANKMIRRORS" where nothing should be reflected was a satirical yet playful world. He hesitated for a moment, but was so moved by the wonderful collection that he couldn't help but post photos of the show with a hashtag.
