Art aquarium artist Hidetomo Kimura's "Art Aquarium 10th Anniversary Festival ECO EDO Nihonbashi Art Aquarium 2016 - Edo, Coolness of Goldfish - & Night Aquarium" exhibition will be held at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall from July 8th to September 25th.
The theme of the Nihonbashi venue is "Edo, Coolness of Goldfish." Inspired by the Edo period culture of Nihonbashi, where common people kept and admired goldfish to cool off, the exhibition brings this culture back to life with a modern twist. The elaborately designed aquarium, the colorful schools of 8,000 goldfish, and vibrant lighting create a fantastical space that makes you feel like you've wandered into the red-light district of the Edo period. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Hidetomo Kimura's Art Aquarium exhibition, and the largest-ever new work, "Super Oiran," will be placed at the center of the venue. On either side of it will be "Ooku," a representation of the opulent Edo period's symbolic Ooku, which was featured as the main exhibit last year and the year before, and "Lotusrium," a lotus flower-themed installation. The exhibition will also feature masterpieces such as "Andonrium," inspired by the traditional Japanese lantern; "Temaririum," a spherical piece inspired by traditional Japanese hand-carved balls; "Edo Sakurarium," a complex piece consisting of "Edo Kiriko Chandelier," made up of approximately 1,000 Edo Kiriko glasses, and "Sakurarium," a piece featuring cherry blossom petals; and "Byoburium," a folding screen-style aquarium with overlapping video projections. The exhibition will also feature "Kirikorium," a new goldfish bowl made from Edo Kiriko.
Also, every night after 7pm, the venue becomes a Night Aquarium, selling drinks (for a fee), where you can enjoy original cocktails and sake. Watching the goldfish swimming will help you forget the heat with a visually refreshing "cool" feeling, and you'll be able to spend a relaxing time there.
In addition to Tokyo (Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall), this aquarium exhibition is also scheduled to be held in Osaka (Dojima River Forum) and Kanazawa (21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa). Each venue has a different theme and exhibits, so we recommend you check them out as well.
