Jul 17, 2016
This is a tour report of places you'll want to visit if you're visiting Paris. On the final day of the trip, we'll visit high jeweler houses in Place Vendôme, the heart of Paris. This time, we'll visit Chaumet, known as the jeweler of love and emotion.

■The message of love that Chaumet puts into its jewelry

Chaumet has a history of 236 years, having provided jewelry to successive generations of royalty and aristocrats. Currently, a limited-time retrospective exhibition is being held at the flagship store, allowing you to see this rare collection. We visited the exhibition "Une Education Sentimentale (Path of the Heart)," which brings together jewelry related to love that Chaumet has created throughout its history.

When you step into the boutiques at 12 Vendôme, the walls and floors are bathed in a romantic pink. Displayed there are gifts of love, such as from men to women or from parents to daughters, as well as jewelry with heart and Cupid's arrow motifs. A heart shape made up of numerous archive photographs of tiaras, necklaces, brooches, and more, draws the viewer in. Photographs of many famous people, from the film industry and the arts, show how Chaumet has been a part of so many moments of love.

Going further inside, you will find a bright red keyhole. After passing through a mysterious space where the sound of heartbeats reverberates, you will be greeted in a passionate red room where drawings and archive pieces with a wing motif will welcome you. The "Wings of Desire," which represents intense passion, is said to be the boldest theme in Chaumet's collection, which has produced over 2,500 pieces of head jewelry, including formal tiaras, airy aigrettes, and graphic headbands. The delicate and light wing motif, which expresses freedom, power, and unrestrained beauty, gives the impression of inviting the wearer to greater heights.

The highlight of the collection is the tiara-like head jewelry collection known as "aigrettes." The wings that adorned the heads of elegant women of the Belle Époque are studded with gemstones of various sizes and colors, and have an intricate design that can be removed and worn as a brooch. Along with their beauty, they also convey the jeweler's meticulous craftsmanship.

As the interior changes from pale pink to deep red, the jewelry changes in theme, from the affection of parent and child to the love of lovers and then to passionate passion. After experiencing the various expressions of love that the Maison has presented and learning why Chaumet is known as the jeweler of love and emotion, the group headed straight to Le Grand Salon on the second floor of the flagship store.

■ View of Place Vendôme from the room where Chopin spent his final years

This room is known as the place where composer Chopin spent his final years and where he composed his last mazurka. The Louis XVI-era building was designated a historic monument by the French government in 1927 and has been preserved in its original style. The beautiful mosaic-patterned wooden floor, the gold decorations that stand out against the white walls, and the painting of an angel on the high ceiling are all awe-inspiring. The moment you open the door, you'll be greeted by a majestic space that will take your breath away.
