A nostalgic space has appeared at Isetan Shinjuku. Memories of summer vacations from "those days" and the world of "Chihiro Iwasaki"

Jul 19, 2016

For three weeks, from July 20th to August 9th, the Center Park/TOKYO Kaihoku on the second floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building will host an event titled "TOKYO Summer Story," inspired by the worldview of artist and picture book author Chihiro Iwasaki.

As a child, your parents would take you back to the countryside, holding your grandparents by the hand, to await you. The sounds of cicadas and the smell of the sea, the woods where you could catch rhinoceros beetles, and the reunion of long-lost relatives and cousins. "TOKYO Summer Story" will evoke nostalgic memories of summer, layered with the world of Chihiro Iwasaki's children's drawings, and will unfold as a three-part story. The event will feature a selection of themed styling, fashion accessories, and miscellaneous goods for sale.

The first chapter, "A Secret Between Us," will be themed on "The Secret Between Us," and will explore memories of summertime friends. The store will feature a selection of girly items inspired by Iwasaki Chihiro's paintings, including floral dresses and blouses from Jun Okamoto and STASTNY SU, as well as flower accessory brands like nooca, Luce Macchia, which offers cool glass accessories, and handmade original hat brand Rose-colored Hats. The lineup is brimming with seasonal flair, making you want to wear them right away. The second chapter, running from July 27th to August 1st, will feature books and miscellaneous goods inspired by the sounds of summer, such as fireworks, wind chimes, ocean spray, and goldfish, which are the height of summer. Additionally, handmade accessory designer Crepe. will be selling brooches with summer-inspired motifs. Simply attach a brooch shaped like Japanese sweets, jelly, insects, or snacks to your T-shirt for a truly summery accent. We offer a variety of ideas for enjoying the short summer with your eyes, ears, and all five senses. The third chapter, running from August 3rd to 9th, is titled "My Treasures," and features a curated selection of one-of-a-kind gifts perfect for friends or grandparents you only see during Obon. Along with special items like sketchbook drawings and beetles, perfect for giving away treasured items from the past, the store also features a selection of unforgettable masterpieces and nostalgic books. Additionally, on August 6th, a "bleed painting" workshop reminiscent of the paintings of Chihiro Iwasaki will be held in-store. Sending a summer greeting card to a special someone will surely be an unforgettable experience.

The buyer in charge commented, "This time, over a long period of three weeks, we have expressed Japanese summer and childhood nostalgia through the world of Iwasaki Chihiro's paintings. Through items that a 'cute girl' would wear, such as soft and fluffy dresses, straw hats, and sparkling brooches, we hope that you will enjoy a fun, comfortable, and healthy summer." Replicas of Iwasaki Chihiro's works will also be on sale at the venue. In addition, the Chihiro Art Museum in Azumino, Nagano Prefecture, is also holding a commemorative exhibition, "We're All Together," from July 15th to coincide with the opening of Totto-chan Square.
