"Design Dissection: How to See the World Through Familiar Objects," an exhibition that dissects everyday products from a design perspective, will be held at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo Midtown Garden from October 14 to January 22, 2017.
The various products we take for granted in our daily lives are intricately crafted at every stage, from materials and flavor to packaging. Graphic designer Taku Satoh has been working on this project since 2001, dissecting everyday products from a design perspective and thoroughly examining the origins of each product. Previous projects have analyzed the logos, package layouts, and printing of products such as Lotte's "Xylitol Gum," Takara (now Takara Tomy)'s "Licca-chan," and ISSEY MIYAKE's "A POC BAGUETTE," meticulously dissecting and examining the inner workings of each product.
The exhibition will showcase the results of his previous dissections and will also focus on five Meiji Co., Ltd. products. Of these, "Kinoko no Yama" will be dissected in over 30 areas, from packaging materials to printing information, product ingredients, movement inside the box during distribution, and individual differences that arise during the manufacturing process. "Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt LB81 Plain" will be dissected, including its sealed packaging and the transportation system that takes into account the physical properties of the yogurt, and will also introduce the product's effect on the good and bad bacteria in the intestines. In addition, five products will be dissected: "Meiji Milk Chocolate," "Meiji Oishii Gyunyu" and "Meiji Essel Super Cup." Young creators active in a variety of fields have been invited to participate, making this an exhibition that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
