Tokyo Skytree visitors reach 5.54 million, exceeding expectations by 1.5 million

Apr 2, 2013

On the 1st, Tobu Railway Co., Ltd., Tobu Tower Skytree Co., Ltd., and Tobu Town Solamachi Co., Ltd. announced the visitor numbers for Tokyo Skytree Town at the end of fiscal year 2012. From its opening day (May 22, 2012) through the end of fiscal year 2013 (March 31, 2013), Tokyo Skytree received approximately 5.54 million visitors, including those who visited the observation deck. The initial forecast of 4 million visitors was surpassed by approximately 1.5 million visitors, exceeding the 400,000 visitors expected at the time of opening. Visitors surpassed 400,000 within one month of opening, reaching 1 million on August 1, the 72nd day. Visitors reached approximately 4.01 million on December 31, and 5 million on February 28, the 283rd day. The total number of visitors to Tokyo Skytree Town, including the tower's observation deck and commercial facilities, was approximately 44.76 million. The initial forecast for attendance was 27.5 million, so this figure far exceeded expectations. By July 19, 2012, the 59th day, the number had already reached 10 million. The three companies estimate that the park will attract 44 million visitors in its first year of operation (May 22, 2012–May 21, 2013). The success of this project is due in part to the buzz surrounding the world's tallest freestanding radio tower, as well as the strong customer appeal of the Solamachi shopping complex, which capitalizes on the Edo period and downtown vibe. While many visitors were unable to access the observation deck due to capacity restrictions, the aquarium, planetarium, and other attractions for both children and adults attracted tourists from both within and outside Japan. Furthermore, the park's ongoing efforts to generate buzz and host events, such as the special lighting events held almost monthly since its grand opening in May of last year, have helped to keep visitors engaged.
