"M/M (PARIS) SUGOROKU DE L'OIE," a poster exhibition by France-based creative duo M/M(Paris), is being held at Parco Museum in Shibuya until April 20th. This exhibition, their first since "The Theatre Posters" in 2008, is unique in that it is themed around "LE JEU DE L'OIE," a traditional French board game similar to the Japanese game "Sugoroku," and displays the posters they have created to date as grids. The venue is made up of intricate corridors that resemble a maze. Why did they decide to hold such a poster exhibition in Japan? We spoke to Matthias Augustyniak of M/M(Paris), who was in Japan for the exhibition. M/M (Paris) has been working on Parco's advertising since the Fall/Winter 2014 season. They chose Parco for their exhibition because, "Parco is a place where a variety of trends are mixed together more than anywhere else, so we thought it was a fitting venue for the theme of the exhibition." "The exhibition space is laid out like a spiral, and we brought 63 carefully selected posters from our archives from France to match the number 63, the number of squares in the French board game 'LE JEU DE L'OIE.'" As Matthias said, the exhibition truly felt like a game, with its own territory and rules. By the way, how did Matthias know about the Japanese game 'Sugoroku'? "Of course, I did some research and found out about it. I've never played it, but there's usually one similar game in each country. 'Sugoroku' felt similar to 'LE JEU DE L'OIE,' so I combined the names of the two to create the exhibition title." Regarding the reason for structuring the exhibition like a game, the artist explains, "As we move pieces like in a game, we express how the decisions we make lead to the destiny we embark upon. Displaying an archive of posters from our 20 years of work also conveys this message." In other words, in a game, various lives are determined by the roll of a dice. Just as it's impossible to predict the next number, M/M(Paris)'s encounters thus far have also been coincidental. The exhibition method, which overlaps their creations with games, reveals the unique mystique and cryptic nature of their work. The layout of the exhibition space, reminiscent of a sugoroku board, displays works in chronological order, from "Brancusi contre Etats-Unis," a poster created in collaboration with the arts center Le Theatre de Lorient in 1996, to their latest work, unveiled in 2014. Among the works on display are collaborative works with artists and creators, such as "Opening Parenthese," a collaboration with photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, with whom M/M(Paris) often collaborates, which presents actor Bill Murray in a collage-like manner, and visuals featuring Karl Lagerfeld and Björk. The venue offers a unique experience, as visitors can view posters arranged in a grid, representing the artists' "trajectories" to date, one by one, as if moving through "frames." --The second part of the article is about M/M(Paris)'s connection with Japan.
