70 T-shirts you'll never want to throw away, Kyoichi Tsuzuki's "Life is in the Shape of a T" [NADiff Recommended Book]

Jun 22, 2017

Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop NADiff. This week's exhibit is the "Finland Design Exhibition." This is introduced by NADiff Aichi, our Aichi/Nagoya branch (Aichi Arts Center B2F, 1-13-2 Higashisakura, Higashi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture).

■ "T-Shirts You Can't Throw Away" by Tsuzuki Kyoichi

This book is based on a series of articles that appeared in the weekly email magazine "ROADSIDER'S weekly" from 2015 to 2016 by Tsuzuki Kyoichi, an editor who wrote articles on contemporary art, architecture, design, urban life, and more for magazines like "POPEYE" and "BRUTUS" in the 1970s and 1980s.

The book contains stories of the relationships between "unthrowable" T-shirts and their owners. The 70 T-shirts in total range from those that are sentimental and cannot be thrown away, to those that cannot be thrown away for some reason ("sad"). The reasons for this and the relationships between T-shirts and people are extremely diverse.

As the book's cover reads, "Life was shaped like a T," the stories told reveal a glimpse of each person's life, and the information revealed about the owners, such as their age, gender, occupation, and place of origin, further stimulates the imagination. Once you start reading, you won't be able to put it down.
