Just as you might choose clothes or accessories, you might choose flowers at Matilda, a flower shop on the second floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku. We spoke to Nakamura Hitomi, who selects plants with the goal of delivering consistent quality flowers year-round, about flower gifts. First up is a bouquet wrapped in a black, cylindrical box. "When we opened our store at Isetan, we thought of new ways to offer flowers to a wide range of customers. One of those ideas is this bouquet box," Nakamura says. "We heard from men that walking around town with a bouquet feels a little embarrassing, so we wrapped the bouquet in a black box that doesn't even seem to contain flowers," she says. Selecting fragrant flowers will gently release their fragrance when you open the box. This time, a yellow-based, spring-like bouquet combines bright yellow "Catalina" roses with fresh beige "Terracotta" carnations and Onisogalum sieboldii. The gift arrangement has an elegant pink base and features fragrant Bourgeois roses. The arrangement features flowers such as gerberas "Tracy," fritillaries, and the vibrant green carnation "New York," complemented by airy, expressive greenery such as raspberry leaves, dracaena, and galax. The key to ensuring the gift arrangement lasts a long time is to keep it well-hydrated and in a cool place. Nakamura offers advice for those unsure of how to choose a flower gift: "First, don't be shy and tell the store clerk about the occasion or purpose for which you'll be giving the gift, as well as the recipient's favorite colors. For Mother's Day on May 10th, Matilda has prepared arrangements with four themes. Choose one that reflects the recipient's image, such as gentle, energetic, chic, or cute," says Nakamura.
