Fashion designer Michael Kors was born on August 9, 1959, in New York State, USA. While attending the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), he was responsible for designing items for the boutique where he worked as a salesperson. After graduating in 1981, he launched his own brand, Michael Kors, and sold women's wear at major department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. In 1997, he became the women's creative director of Celine. His efforts successfully attracted a younger customer base and helped the brand become recognized as a globally prestigious brand. In 1999, he was awarded Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Since stepping down as creative director of Celine in 2004, he has been based in New York, focusing on designing his own brand. The brand currently also has a second line, MICHAEL Michael Kors, and a casual line, KORS Michael Kors.
Kors has been frequently featured in the media, having served as a judge on the American fashion designer discovery program "Project Runway: New York Designer Battle" since 2006, until recently. This has earned him support from young people aspiring to work in the fashion industry, and this spring he was named one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" by Time magazine, which publishes its annual list.
He visited Japan in 2011 to celebrate the opening of the Michael Kors Roppongi Hills store, and also appeared at "Vogue Fashion Night."
