This week's gallery tour gives you a little break - August vol.3

Aug 16, 2013

With the main summer events drawing to a close, you're probably feeling a bit exhausted. This week, we'd like to introduce you to a little-known exhibition being held at a smaller gallery.
■ "Childness," a photo exhibition by Achim Lipotto, who has worked on advertising for Marc Jacobs and Diesel, among others.
Location: Gallery SpeakFor (1st basement floor, 28-2 Sarugaku-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo)
This German-born photographer has carved out his own unique genre with children's portraits and fashion photography. This exhibition focuses on his latest photo series published in the children's clothing magazine "kid's wear." Until the 28th. Admission is free.
■ Spreading girly culture! "Melting Dreams" by illustrators Ogawa Keiko and Saito Keisuke
Location: Isetan Girl Gallery, 2nd floor, Isetan Shinjuku (3-14-1 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo)
Did you know there's an art gallery inside Isetan Girl? The curator is Taguchi Maki, who runs the "MIG project," a project that promotes girly culture to the world. Artists change every two to three weeks, promoting "the latest Tokyo trends that are attracting the world's attention." This week, there is a two-person exhibition featuring Ogawa Keiko and artist Saito Keisuke. It runs until the 26th. Admission is free.

■ Tattoo sculpture artist Kubota Miki's new exhibition "AN IMAGE 2"
Location: hpgrp GALLERY TOKYO (CH Building B1F, 5-1-15 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo)
This exhibition features works in which tattoos on people's bodies are photographed and printed on paper to create three-dimensional tattoos. The parts that are not visible as tattoos are apparently created from the artist's imagination. It runs until the 18th. Admission is free. ■Andy Warhol Exhibition "WARHOLS - Early Editions & Printed Matters" Location: Gallery Target (2-32-10 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) This summer, Andy Warhol made headlines when his "200 Campbell's Soup Cans" debuted in Japan at the "American Pop Art" exhibition. This exhibition introduces him through works created in the 1960s, the decade in which he transitioned from commercial artist to pop artist. The exhibition runs until the 22nd. Admission is free. Other unique exhibitions featuring artists include "Terayama Shuji's Fantasy Library - Throw Away Your Books, Get Out There! -" (Omotesando GYRE) and "Omiya Ellie" (Ginza Graphic Gallery), both of which will end this month, so be sure to check them out! That said, many of you may be heading to the much talked about "American Pop Art" (The National Art Center, Tokyo), a large-scale exhibition that opened in Roppongi this month.

Currently, Roppongi Hills is hosting the summer art festival "Art Flea Market 2" until the 18th. And if you want to take a break, why not try Yayoi Kusama's Polka Dot Cafe "My Favorite Me"? This will also close on the 18th, so this week is your last chance!

It's nice to take a little break and go on a gallery tour every once in a while. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
