Thinking about other people's time through art [NADiff Recommended Book]

Jun 18, 2015

Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Thursday, each branch of the art bookstore "NADiff" will introduce a book they recommend. This time, we'll be looking at NADiff Contemporary, a branch in Kiyosumi Shirakawa, Tokyo (located inside the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, 4-1-1 Miyoshi, Koto-ku, Tokyo).

■ "TIME OF OTHERS"

Official catalog for the exhibition "TIME OF OTHERS," currently running at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (until June 28th).

The phrase "other people's time" evokes the meaning of the time of people who live in the same era but have no connection to us. What builds and divides the relationship between "me" and "others"?

"Dusk/Dawn," a beautiful piece by Shitamichi Motoyuki, one of the exhibiting artists, features two simple blues. This work, which captures a sunset sky and another sky at dawn at the same time, along with the people watching the sky, invites us to consider the time of someone else in another place.

In addition, the exhibition explores otherness through a total of 25 artists, primarily young artists from Asia and Oceania, born in the 1970s and 1980s. Rather than attempting to generalize artists of different races, histories, and styles by identifying commonalities, the book deliberately focuses on the gaps between them and questions what lies between them from a fresh, 2015-present perspective.

With extensive texts by curators from each country, this book offers a glimpse into real art trends in Asia. Featuring many artists whose works are not available in Japan, and whose works are not available in general bookstores, this is an unmissable publication.

The exhibition will travel to Osaka, Singapore, and Brisbane.
