Wittamer, a chocolate brand purveyor to the Belgian Royal Family, will begin selling its traditional Belgian butter sandwich, "Miserable," on June 1st. Miserable is one of Belgium's three traditional sweets, and is a simple-tasting treat that remains beloved in Belgium today.

Miserable is a French word meaning "shabby" or "miserable," and the name comes from the use of water instead of milk in the buttercream. Wittamer's Miserables also use water in the buttercream, but the addition of vanilla beans enhances the aroma and makes them easier to eat. Each one is individually wrapped, making them a great gift or snack.
