"I'm pleased to announce that I have been selected as a Friend of the Moët & Chandon member. I am honored to be appointed to the House. This time, I visited the prestigious Maison in the Champagne region of France, founded 280 years ago, and experienced the prestige and tradition of Moët & Chandon. I was deeply impressed by how, even after establishing its reputation, the Maison has continued to pursue quality without compromise, constantly innovating. I am extremely grateful for being asked to take on this role, and as a member of the Friends, I hope to help pass on to future generations the charm that has endured so much while preserving its traditions.
Three Centuries of Savoir-Faire
Moët & Chandon's winemaking is the culmination of centuries of savoir-faire, where generations of winemakers have perfected their craft using both their wisdom and sensibility. Combining cutting-edge technology with time-honored traditions, each Moët & Chandon Champagne is unique, with a flavor that continues to be loved for generations. Moët & Chandon's winemakers have always respected the exceptional grapes that the Champagne terroir produces.

The largest vineyard in Champagne
Spanning 1,150 hectares (the equivalent of 245 Tokyo Domes) of rich chalky soil, 50% of which is classified as Grand Cru (Premier Cru) and 25% as Premier Cru (First Growth). Furthermore, as a leader in the Champagne region, Moët & Chandon is working closely with nature, working with the local community to regenerate the soil and nurture local flora and fauna through its biodiversity program "Natura Nostra" to combat climate change. Yamashita experienced this magnificent terroir and experienced firsthand the "bond with nature" that Moët & Chandon values most.

28km of underground cellars, one of the largest in the Champagne region
Moët & Chandon's labyrinthine 28km cellars are located 10-30m underground in limestone soil, and the temperature is maintained at an ideal 10-12°C throughout the year. Yamashita-san learned about the mysteries of champagne-making that have been passed down over the years by successive cellar masters, and also toured special cellars that are not normally open to the public.

The Moët & Chandon Maison, located in the heart of Épernay in the Champagne region
The first building to be built on Avenue de Champagne, the main street stretching from the center of Épernay, where many Champagne houses are now located, was the Moët & Chandon Maison. The first place Yamashita visited that day was the Résidence du Trianon. Built by Jean-Rémy Moët, the third-generation head of the family and who also served as mayor of Épernay, the mansion features a large garden and an orangery (guest house). Yamashita also visited the hilltop chateau, surrounded by spacious gardens and vineyards, and stayed at Chateau de Saran, a guesthouse symbolizing the Maison's hospitality.Courtesy of MHD

ABOUT MOET & CHANDON

Maison Moët & Chandon, a champagne loved the world over, has captivated people by accompanying celebrations and life's unforgettable moments since its founding in 1743. Moët & Chandon was beloved as the official wine of the French court during the reign of King Louis XV, and Madame de Pompadour declared, "Only champagne can make a woman more beautiful after drinking it." The Maison was also favored by Tsar Alexander I of Russia and King Charles X of France, among others. Napoleon I shared a particularly deep friendship with Jean-Rémy, the family's then-owner, and the Maison's flagship champagne, Moët Impérial, was named "Imperial" in honor of Napoleon I. Moët & Chandon boasts the largest vineyard area in the Champagne region, and by utilizing its high-quality grapes, long-cultivated champagne-making know-how, and modern facilities, it has inherited the savoir-faire (artisanal craftsmanship) perfected by generations of winemakers for nearly three centuries since its founding in 1743. Furthermore, the Maison is committed to protecting biodiversity in the Champagne region through its sustainability program, "Natura Nostra," and has also launched its charitable program, "Toast for a Cause," since 2009. From the iconic Moët Impériale to the rare Grand Vintage Collection, as well as the refreshing Ice Impériale and the gentle Nectar Impériale, each has its own unique character, making it approachable, and its wide range of flavors makes it a champagne that can be enjoyed on any occasion, continuing to fascinate people around the world.
