Jean Paul Gaultier selects Sacai's Chitose Abe as guest designer for his haute couture collection

Mar 5, 2020

Jean Paul Gaultier has announced that Sacai's Chitose Abe will be the guest designer for his haute couture collection to be held in July 2020.

As part of a new project, Jean Paul Gaultier will invite a designer each season to express the house's aesthetic based on their own interpretation, and develop an haute couture collection. Abe has been selected as the first designer to be appointed.

Regarding Abe's selection for this project, Gaultier commented as follows: "The idea of having different designers interpret a single haute couture brand came to me when I realized that there was no specific designer at the Paris haute couture houses in the 1990s. I am delighted that this concept has become a reality with Sacai's Chitose Abe as our first guest designer. I admire her work; we share many creative commonalities and a similar vision for fashion. I wanted her to have complete freedom to design." Abe, meanwhile, commented, "I have long admired Jean Paul's unique vision and originality, which expresses subversive femininity, since the very beginning of my career. I am deeply honored to be welcomed into his house as the first designer for this project."
