The 8th Toraya Market Bon Festival, an exhibition and sale of practical food-related items, will be held at the Toraya Tokyo Midtown Gallery from December 4th to April 13th, 2020.

With the aim of not only promoting Japanese sweets but also the various charms and values of Japanese culture, Toraya Tokyo Midtown has opened a gallery and hosts special exhibitions. Toraya Market has exhibited and sold practical food-related items with the aim of providing an opportunity to reexamine the practicality and beauty of traditional tools in daily life. Previous exhibitions have included dishcloths and tenugui towels, and lunch boxes, and this Bon Festival will be the 8th in its history.

The basic shape of a tray, with its shallow rim and flat bottom, has remained unchanged since ancient times, making it a familiar tool used by everyone from the Imperial Court to the common people. Over the years, trays have been used for a variety of purposes, primarily at mealtimes, including as serving utensils, as trays, and as vessels for serving food. Furthermore, their materials, manufacturing methods, and designs have continued to change and evolve to suit their diverse uses.

This exhibition focuses on wooden trays, each handcrafted, and showcases them alongside photographs of various sweets and dishes.

The walls feature pages from Kurashi no Techo magazine from the 1950s to the 2010s featuring trays. Additionally, to showcase the wide range of ways a single tray can be used, photographs of 13 different combinations of food and trays will be on display. The central display stand will feature photographs of Toraya's seasonal sweets paired with various trays, as well as actual trays.

The venue will sell 10 types of trays, including round, oval, and square, all made from domestically sourced wood. The lineup includes items that are useful in everyday life and that change over time, such as stackable trays and trays that develop beautiful colors with use and care.
