The "Vincent Willem van Gogh" exhibition will open on October 11th at the Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo. An opening event featuring actress Hana Sugisaki was held the day before.

Vincent van Gogh (Vincent Willem van Gogh) is a painter who continues to fascinate people with his intense colors. Of his short 37-year life, he was active as a painter for only 10 years. This exhibition, divided into two sections—Part 1, "Guided by the Hague School," and Part 2, "Learning from the Impressionists"—follows two life-changing encounters between Van Gogh and his painters. The exhibit features approximately 40 of Van Gogh's works, as well as approximately 30 works by Hague School and Impressionist masters such as Paul Cézanne and Claude Monet. It also features passages from Van Gogh's letters, revealing how Van Gogh became Van Gogh. Hana Sugisaki will serve as the exhibition's navigator and narrator for the audio guide. At the opening event, she appeared in front of "Cedar Thread" (June 1889, Saint-Rémi, oil on canvas, Metropolitan Museum of Art), a late work by Van Gogh that is visiting Japan for the first time in seven years, wearing a yellow dress, one of Van Gogh's favorite colors.

In response to the question, "Which work were you particularly interested in?", Sugisaki Hana replied, "I was looking forward to Wheat Field and Poppies." Sugisaki, who also hosts a radio program on TOKYO FM, said of the audio guide, "I hope it will help you concentrate on appreciating the painting (though this may be presumptuous..." she said, modestly).

At the end of the event, Sugisaki, who turned 22 on October 2nd, was surprised with a reproduction of Wheat Field and Poppies.

This exhibition is then scheduled to travel to the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art (January 25th to March 29th, 2020).
