What is the secret to "effortless French chic"? Lancôme's Lisa and Caroline de Maigret discuss their beauty philosophy

May 6, 2015

This year marks the 80th anniversary of Lancôme's founding. To celebrate the anniversary, new makeup creative director Lisa Eldridge and Lancôme muse Caroline de Maigret visited Japan. In April, they held a talk show with celebrity model Marie at Ebisu Garden Place. Lancôme was founded in 1935 by perfumer Armand Petitjean, inspired by his passion for women's beauty. This season, marking the brand's 80th anniversary, the brand will promote the French beauty approach to women around the world with the concept of "Effortless French Chic." Lisa Eldridge is a sought-after makeup artist trusted by many celebrities and constantly receiving calls from leading magazines and fashion brands around the world. She is a unique influencer who has garnered support from many women with her innovative ideas and concepts, such as posting videos on YouTube that clearly explain the process of applying makeup to herself.

Lancôme and Lisa share a common beauty philosophy: not following trends too closely. "Beauty emanates from the heart, and makeup should accentuate that," Lisa says.

"Lancôme has a long history, and we want to continue to protect these customers. At the same time, just as when I took over last October, we incorporated a variety of color-themed projects and launched new products as a result, I want to challenge myself in new ways and reflect my own creativity."

In the future, Lisa plans to develop techniques that make it easier for women to apply makeup. We'll be keeping an eye on her as she continues to innovate and take on new challenges as a bridge between consumers and brands.

Caroline de Maigret, who has been chosen as Lancôme's muse, is a Parisian and fashion icon who works in a variety of fields, including as a model and music producer. An object of admiration for women worldwide, she had the following to say about "effortless French chic" from a fashion perspective:

"The secret to style and beauty is to be yourself. Your individuality doesn't come overnight, but once you've found it, it's very easy. The way to find your own style is to learn, for example, how you want to be seen, and how others see you, and build your core. That's what effortlessness is all about.

For example, I have one piece in my closet that I know will make me look beautiful. Whether I'm in a good mood or a bad mood, a white cotton shirt always gives me confidence.

Don't chase trends too much. Instead, imagine that 'it's not me chasing trends, but rather the trends chasing me.' That's the difference between style and fashion."

Caroline speaks innocently, her eyes shining like a child's. As she ages, she becomes more and more radiant as a woman, and she plans to continue various collaborations with Lancôme, including creating a French and unexpected makeup collection.
