Stylist Hayashi Motoko gives advice on the rules of a well-calculated "white" outfit

May 14, 2015

Right now, attention is focused on white items. The clean power of the achromatic color white instantly brings a sense of lightness and sophistication. While minimalist all-white outfits are appealing, this season's abundance of white-colored items, from tops and bottoms to shoes, makes white a great accent piece for any outfit.

However, styling white may seem simple, but it can be quite challenging. Is there a formula for success?

So, we interviewed stylist Hayashi Motoko, who works with fashion magazines, talents, and models both in Japan and abroad, about effective ways to incorporate white and the items she's currently most interested in.

The day of the interview was a refreshing early summer day with a refreshing breeze. Hayashi coordinated an ACNE STUDIOS cut and sew top with a sacai side pleated skirt, and on her feet, REGAL's F06F BH (BRWT) from the Premium Line, which just debuted last season. The leather jacket is from Bershka, and the bag is a Saint Laurent SAC DE JOUR. A style that is typical of Hayashi, who mixes high and low styles and wears well-tailored items with ease and nonchalance. "Today, I used white as a focal point in my skirt and shoes to create a nice, airy look. To make white pop, first pay attention to the material. Lightweight materials like see-through and mesh are recommended for the upcoming season. Choosing a clean, unobtrusive white is also key to successful styling." The white pleated chiffon peeks out from the unique silhouette of the wrap skirt, and the leather shoes are the perfect complement to the handsome brown and white combination. Adding a single statement piece like this can really elevate your outfit. Furthermore, by sticking to basic colors and focusing on the amount of white, as Hayashi does, you can achieve a highly polished look. "Just changing one-third of your body to white creates a clean, trendy look. Combining items with different textures can help avoid monotony in your outfit. Show off delicate parts like your ankles for a healthy look," says Hayashi. These are must-know techniques for completing a white outfit this summer.

And right now, white shoes are the most popular and versatile. Hayashi says she's already incorporating them into her daily routine. In addition to the shoes worn by Hayashi, this season's Regal Premium Line also includes men's-like leather shoes such as the F08F BH and F24F CD (due for release in late June), as well as shoes that accentuate white, such as the F23F CC (GOWT). They blend seamlessly with casual summer styles and bring out a feminine charm, making them a must-buy item for stylists and other industry insiders.

Take Hayashi's advice and incorporate these versatile shoes into your latest white outfits to brush up your summer styling.
