Van Cleef & Arpels releases new pieces in its "Lucky Animals" collection, which poetically depicts animals.

Jan 17, 2023

New additions have been made to the Lucky Animals collection, featuring poetic clips depicting animals. Named Teddy Bear, Fox, Dachshund, Bichon Frise and Frog, these animals are carved from ornamental stones and mother-of-pearl, delicately accentuated with gold beaded trim. Their vibrant expressions breathe new life into Van Cleef & Arpels' compassionate tradition.

Adorable Companions
First introduced in 2017, the Lucky Animals collection embodies the gentle and compassionate world of nature, a constant source of inspiration for Van Cleef & Arpels. The clips capture the animals in their natural movements, vibrantly colored and featuring sparkling onyx in their curious eyes.

Each clip features a distinctive design that highlights the animal's unique personality. The fox, a symbol of intelligence and caution, is a watchful animal whose silky fur is accentuated with translucent carnelian. Meanwhile, the frog, seemingly ready to leap, is captured in a dynamic yet brave expression. The dachshund is portrayed as playful and adventurous, while the bichon frise is portrayed as friendly and playful. And the teddy bear's gentle expression evokes childhood nostalgia.

A Vibrant Interplay of Materials
Drawing on more than 100 years of expertise, Van Cleef & Arpels carefully selects its materials to give each clip a unique, lively expression. The ornamental stones are selected for their vibrant, even color. The orange-red hue of the carnelian delicately evokes the dachshund's fur, while the harmonious stripes of the malachite evoke the appearance of a frog. The deep, lustrous black of the onyx adds sparkle to the animals' eyes.

The mother-of-pearl used is also of the highest quality, carefully selected by the Maison's skilled gemologists. For the white mother-of-pearl, the emphasis is on a clear, even reflection, while for the grey, it is the subtle nuances that matter. The combination of these two materials in the Bichon Frise clip creates a soft and delicate impression.

The other animals in the collection feature silver obsidian for the pig clip, mahogany obsidian for the rabbit, lapis lazuli for the duck, and tiger's eye for the hedgehog and lion.

Meticulous Craftsmanship in Gold and Stones
The Maison's exceptional savoir-faire shines through the precision and meticulous work required in every step of the creative process. The small size of each piece requires meticulous care in cutting the stones and mother-of-pearl and polishing the piece. The tiny gold beads that frame the animals' silhouettes are individually polished by hand, adding a touch of precious sparkle to the creations. On the new clips, lustrously polished gold adorns the legs, ears and muzzles, giving the animals a radiant sense of life. The Lucky Animals collection features a variety of materials and hues, such as the Fox in white mother-of-pearl and carnelian, or the Hummingbird in malachite and lapis lazuli. In the Panda, the mother-of-pearl marquetry poetically expresses the colors of nature, bringing vitality and refinement to the piece.

A tradition cherished by the Maison
The clips from the Lucky Animals collection are reminiscent of La Boutique's charming depictions of animals. Launched in 1954, this collection was conceived to enrich Van Cleef & Arpels' offering with accessible, casual jewelry. The playful and delightful clips, nicknamed "Young Jewels," became a popular choice. Over the years, a series of delightful and endearing animal motifs were created, drawing inspiration from early American animation. These creatures, such as Lion Everyfée (the shaggy-haired lion), Cha Malicieux (the mischievous cat), Canard Frondour (the cheeky duck), and Curié Curieuse (the inquisitive mouse), are all memorably charming with their playful poses, adorable little faces, and evocative names.

The Maison has always expressed a deep love for the richness and diversity of the animal kingdom. The interplay of materials highlights the magnificent contrasts of nature. Wood set with mother-of-pearl, butterflies in gold enamel, birds of paradise in brilliant colours, griffins and phoenixes are just a few of the creatures that make up this enchanting world. In 2016, Van Cleef & Arpels presented its first High Jewelry collection dedicated to the animal kingdom, bringing together more than 60 animal pairs from Noah's Ark and the three fantastical creatures that escorted them. Today, the Lucky Animals clip, perfect for everyday use, celebrates our beloved companions and continues the Maison's animal-themed tradition.
