George Clooney celebrates the OMEGA Speedmaster on the moon

May 15, 2015

OMEGA held a special event in Houston, Texas on May 12th. Brand ambassador George Clooney appeared to celebrate the history of OMEGA's iconic Speedmaster, the watch known as the first to land on the moon. The Speedmaster was released by OMEGA in 1957. In 1965, it was certified as standard equipment for NASA astronauts and was worn by the astronauts who first landed on the moon in 1969. It's also known as the "Moon Watch." For the event, the venue was transformed into a spaceship, with a huge airplane hangar decorated to resemble a starry sky. Special sound effects recreated the scene of a spaceship taking off from Earth, followed by a spectacular transformation into a glittering lunar landscape. Guests included George Clooney, astronauts with ties to Houston, including Eugene Cernan, General Thomas Stafford, Apollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell, fashion icon Lynn Wyatt, and actress Joanna Garcia. George Clooney addressed the guest astronauts onstage, saying, "There was a time when this country needed you to dream. You are our inspiration. Let me tell you how honored I am to be here with you tonight." The 2015 Speedmaster Collection also includes new watches, such as the Speedmaster '57 and the Speedmaster Apollo 13 45th Anniversary Snoopy Award. The Speedmaster White Side of the Moon, inspired by the moon's appearance from Earth, will also be available.
