"Anzai Mizumaru ON THE TABLE," a solo exhibition showcasing works left in the studio of illustrator Mizumaru Anzai, who passed away suddenly in 2014, is being held from January 12th to February 3rd at ondo kagurazaka, a gallery inside Kamome Books in Kagurazaka, Tokyo.


Anzai Mizumaru, a freelance illustrator who worked in a wide range of fields, including advertising, book design, manga, novels, and essays, passed away suddenly in March 2014 due to a cerebral hemorrhage. While sorting through the works left behind in his studio, a new silkscreen piece created specifically for this solo exhibition was discovered. It was created between 1987 and 1991, when Anzai was between the ages of 45 and 49.

Tense compositions, scratchy lines, and diaphanous colors. This exhibition will feature 10 of these precious silkscreen works. The collection, "ON THE TABLE," will also be available for purchase. Published by Baci, a publishing label established in 2016, the book won the Japan Book Publishers Association Chairman's Award in the Art Book category at the 51st Japan Book Design Competition. Newly reprinted mixed-media prints of some of the works will also be available for purchase.


A single line drawn across the page separates earth from heaven, creating a space known as the "horizon." Many such horizons can be seen in the exhibition, titled "ON THE TABLE," and in the collection. The objects scattered across the horizon sometimes evoke joy, sometimes sadness, with a warmth that tugs at the heartstrings.
