On November 30th, Dior held its first-ever Pre-Fall 2019 Men's Collection show in Japan at the Tokyo Telecom Center. This was the second collection by Men's Artistic Director Kim Jones.

The venue was transformed into a futuristic space, decorated with a giant 11-meter-tall female figure and cherry blossom patterns created by contemporary artist Hajime Sorayama.

The haute couture collection was inspired by Japanese clothing culture. Wide sash belts draped and tied like the obi of a kimono, garments that crisscross to envelop the body, seamless, flowing shoulder lines, and kimono-like draping are all delicate expressions derived from traditional Japanese clothing and are repeatedly used in Christian Dior's collections. Kim also explored the hyper-modern reality of Japanese culture, creating a groundbreaking hybrid by blending tradition and modernity, and combining couture techniques with cutting-edge technology.

The tailoring is a clever reinterpretation of three elements that are characteristic of Dior: houndstooth tweed, pink, and panthère print. The houndstooth tweed has an antique feel, while the panthère has a watercolor-like texture. The iconic Dior rose is rendered in a pink reminiscent of Japanese cherry blossoms, harmonizing with the pearl grey of Dior's color scheme. The fabric is treated with metallization technology and is used on all items.

Accessories are scaled or enlarged to play with the image of "kawaii," with second pochettes adorned like charms. Also, the detachable exterior pocket component of the bag has been revived from the "Street Chic" accessory series, launched in 2002. Furthermore, Kim has adapted the "Saddle" bag to create a design that can be enjoyed in multiple ways.

A collaboration with stage decorator Hajime Sorayama features the iconic female android and Japanese-inspired leaf ornaments. The Dior Oblique canvas is paired with contrasting colors of inky midnight blue and cherry blossom pink. Jewelry designed by Yoon features sturdy, industrial-looking chains with nuts and bolts that echo the robot. Sorayama's interpretation of the Dior logo is transformed into necklaces, rings, and brooches.

The centerpiece is a giant robot by Hajime Sorayama. Construction began in mid-September, and painting took 20 days.
