The "Osaka Meccha Matcha Latte" and "Osaka Meccha Matcha Frappuccino®" will be available at 105 Starbucks stores in Osaka Prefecture for a limited 10-day period starting November 12th.
Starbucks opened its first store in Japan in Ginza, Tokyo in August 1996. The first store in Western Japan, the Umeda HEP FIVE store in Osaka, opened on November 28th, 1998, and this year marks its 20th anniversary. As part of the commemorative anniversary project "OSAKA 20th Thanks week," the drinks will be available as "Osaka Meccha Matcha Latte" (Short 440 yen / Tall 480 yen / Grande 520 yen / Venti® 560 yen) and "Osaka Meccha Matcha Frappuccino®" (Short 550 yen / Tall 590 yen / Grande 630 yen / Venti® 670 yen).
As Sen no Rikyu was born in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, the drink has a matcha base. Compared to Starbucks' standard matcha powder drinks, the drink uses more than 1.5 times the amount of matcha powder, resulting in a taste that is "meccha" as the name suggests. The "Osaka Meccha Matcha Frappuccino®" features a pure white base that tastes like vanilla ice cream layered on a green base that fully captures the flavor of matcha, creating a striking contrast between the two colors. It is topped with whipped cream, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, and matcha powder, expressing Osaka's spirit of service, which says, "We want you to enjoy everything!"
Also available is the "Iced Osaka Meccha Matcha Latte," which is based on the popular "Matcha Tea Latte" and is shaken by a barista for each order. Both drinks will be on sale until November 21st. While supplies last, they're gone, so hurry!
