Noir Kei Ninomiya's Renewed Black: Proof of Existence Carried by Fluff [Women's Spring/Summer 2019]

Oct 4, 2018

Noir Kei Ninomiya, the designer behind Ninomiya Kei, held his Spring/Summer 2019 collection show at Espace Lefèvre in southern Paris, on the border between the suburbs and Paris. The theme was "fusion." The collection explored the contrast between the hard and soft of materials—silk and PVC, lamé tulle and synthetic leather—while blending them together. The collection kicked off with pieces featuring PVC arranged like petals. Each piece offered a different texture, with subtle variations, including pieces secured by wire at the edges of PVC parts or stitched with thread. Items entirely free of sewing machines, such as a dress made of folded ribbons and a skirt with rivets attached to synthetic leather parts, remained. A seamless lamé tulle dress riveted to synthetic leather ribbons was also featured, but its lightness reminded me of the dandelion seeds resting on the models' wigs. As the models walked, seeds continued to float down the runway, and at the end, a dress reminiscent of a dandelion seed was introduced.

The fluff floating in the air created a fantasy world, and combined with the poetic dresses, viewers were transported to a dreamlike state.
