[Cannes Film Festival] Celebrity fashion showcased by long-established French brands like Dior and YSL

May 27, 2015

The 68th Cannes Film Festival, which began on May 13th (local time), concluded on the 24th. Speaking of film festivals, just as much attention is focused on the outcome of the awards race, as it is on the fashion show that unfolds on the red carpet. Cannes, one of the world's three major film festivals along with Berlin and Venice, is particularly glamorous, as it is held in France, the "holy land of fashion."

French actresses, actors, and other industry figures all dressed up in dresses from their own fashion houses, highlighting France's status as a fashionable nation. Of course, invited guests from other countries, including filmmakers, often wore French brands as a tribute to the host country.

Standing out were long-established French fashion houses such as Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.

Let's start with Dior. Charlize Theron chose a Dior look with a striking bright yellow and long train. Marion Cotillard paired a baby blue couture dress with Chopard jewelry. On another day, she wore a different design, but with pleated fabric for a more modern look. As muses of the fashion house, these women's outfits were truly stunning. Models Suki Waterhouse, Angelababy, and Mélanie Laurent wore youthful white, Noomi Rapace a seductive red, Isabella Rossellini a vibrant yet subdued yellow, and Laetitia Casta a sophisticated couture dress, all adding a touch of glamour to the red carpet. Many celebrities also chose Yves Saint Laurent. French actress Sophie Marceau wore a multicolored slit dress, South Korean actress Jeon Do-yeon a one-shoulder black dress and a masculine suit, and Salma Hayek a retro-inspired ladylike style in a multi-print dress. Also striking were Lily Donaldson's beaded long gown and Jane Fonda's sequined dress, exuding the elegance of formal occasions. Other celebrities spotted were wearing European brands, such as Valentino, from France's neighboring country, Italy. Sienna Miller chose a dress from Valentino's Spring/Summer 2015 Couture collection, featuring striking color blocking. On another day, she appeared in a Sonia Rykiel gown. Though the dress was all black, it featured a slightly retro feel thanks to the star pattern on the organza, a layered gown design, a youthful sheer silhouette, and a safety pin detail at the chest, adding a playful touch. She paired it with chunky-heeled sandals, a trendy look this year, showcasing Sienna's sophisticated French chic.

Other notables included Natalie Portman, who chose a beautiful emerald green gown by LANVIN, showing off a noble style with her hair pulled back tight and simple dangling black earrings, and Diane Kruger, who showed off a Prada look just like she'd seen on the runway, making the film festival a showcase of cutting-edge fashion. As expected, actresses on the Cannes red carpet also seemed to be putting their all into showing off their fashion sense.
