With the Tokyo Olympics in sight, the much talked about "Japanese Wine Matsuri Festival" will be held in Toyosu, with plans to continue until 2020.

May 29, 2015

The "Japan Wine MATSURI Festival," an event featuring wineries from across Japan, will be held for three days only from June 5th to 7th at Toyosu Park in Tokyo. Enjoy a glass of Japanese wine from around Japan for as little as 300 yen, making this a must-see for wine enthusiasts.

Japanese wine is made entirely from grapes grown in Japan. From Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south, grapes are cultivated and brewed to suit the local soil and climate, resulting in unique wines. Japan's indigenous varieties, "Koshu" and "Muscat Bailey A," are registered and certified as wine grape varieties by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV).

This year's inaugural "Japan Wine MATSURI Festival" will feature exhibits from 38 wineries in 17 prefectures, from Hokkaido to Miyazaki. Each region will have its own booth, allowing visitors to enjoy a variety of Japanese wines paired with food. In addition, there will be Japanese wine seminars and a live music performance on stage. The event will be held at Toyosu Park, located in the Tokyo waterfront area adjacent to the LaLaport Toyosu shopping complex and attracting attention as the new location for Tsukiji Market in 2016. Toyosu is also a hot spot for businesses across industries, as it will be home to the athletes' village and competition venues for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The background to this event is the growing interest in Japanese food culture overseas, with "washoku" (traditional Japanese cuisine) being registered as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage" by UNESCO in 2013, and Japanese wine also gaining attention. The event seems to be aimed at further promoting and expanding Japanese wine. There are also plans to hold the event once a year until the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Like the popularity of whiskey in the NHK morning drama "Massan," the event may be aiming to adapt imported food cultures into Japanese styles, make a big hit in Japan, and then promote them overseas.
