30 Years After the Release of "Porco Rosso," Breitling Launches a Limited-Edition Cosmonaut Dedicated to the Beloved Pilot Porco

Oct 17, 2022
Breitling is pleased to present the Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaut Porco Rosso, a unique 24-hour watch created in collaboration with Studio Ghibli. This unique 24-hour watch is inspired by the Cosmonaut that became the first Swiss wristwatch in space in 1962. Now, to commemorate 60 years since that historic flight, 30 years since the release of the film Porco Rosso, and the long-awaited opening of Studio Ghibli Park, Breitling is introducing a limited-edition Cosmonaut dedicated to the beloved aviator Porco.

The Navitimer Cosmonaut: The First Swiss Wristwatch in Space
Developed in 1952, the Navitimer featured an aviation circular slide rule for all necessary calculations during flight, making it the definitive pilot's watch. However, by the early 1960s, the space race was on and a secret competition was underway: watchmakers were competing to create the world's first astronaut watch. On May 24, 1962, when Scott Carpenter put it on his wrist and took off aboard the Mercury Atlas 7, the Navitimer Cosmonaute officially became the world's first Swiss wristwatch chronograph in space, once again demonstrating Breitling's aviation prowess. This model, at Carpenter's personal request, added a 24-hour dial to the iconic Navitimer, helping to distinguish day from night in the darkness of space. After three orbits of the Earth, the Mercury Atlas 7 splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean, cementing its place in aviation and watchmaking history.

Breitling and Porco Rosso Team Up Again
Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaut Porco Rosso
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Navitimer Cosmonaute. The renowned Studio Ghibli film "Porco Rosso" also celebrates its 30th anniversary since its premiere. In fact, the two companies previously released the Cosmonaut Porco Rosso Special Edition in 2001. This year, the Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaut Porco Rosso was born in celebration of the opening of Ghibli Park.
This watch features a Savoia S-21, Porco's beloved watch, printed at 24 o'clock on the dial, and an illustration of Porco printed on the sapphire crystal caseback. The steel caseback is also engraved with a signature certifying that this watch is one of 100 limited editions. The manual-wound Manufacture Caliber B02 comes with a five-year warranty, a power reserve of approximately 70 hours, and the date can be changed at any time. The case and bezel are made of stainless steel. A special booklet introducing the film's story and the product is included with every purchase.
This watch will be available for Club Breitling members from October 14th. For more information, please visit the Club Breitling members' page on Breitling.com.
